The Worth of Science
The past few lessons that I have delivered have been looking at scientific facts that are found in the Bible. These scientific findings in the Bible are a good source of evidence that the Scriptures are God’s inspired word, and that there is in fact a living God who created all that is around us and within us.
Through scientific discoveries and tests we can see that what is spoken of in the Bible is true. We can see that science is something that is good to know—it is something that can actually help give further backing to the word of God. However, are these physical evidences the main highlight of God’s word? Are the scientific “signs” what we should be focusing on?
Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing [Jesus] asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.
He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;
“and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. Matt. 16:1-3.
We can look to the sky and tell what the weather is likely to be. We can look under microscopes and through telescopes, and learn more of our bodies and the universe. We can perform tests and look for evidences to scientific theories, but what is its worth?
We can look all around us at the evidences and signs of a God. We can follow the evidence and come to the conclusion that there is a Creator. But where does that really get us? If we stop there - at believing in God - we have gotten nowhere! Believing in God and doing nothing about it is hypocritical!
In the end our physical understanding does not amount to much. We need to open up God’s word and study from it. We need to read, learn, and grow. Most importantly we need to follow God’s word. We have to obey His commands and follow Jesus. Only through Jesus can we be saved. And only by continuing within Jesus’ footsteps can we remain saved.
Looking for evidence and learning of scientific signs that there is a God is all well and good. But if we do not act appropriately we haven’t gained anything. Without obedience to God, science is worth nothing! But if used as a stepping stone to the truth, science can be a valuable resource.
