The Plan and the Trinity
Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, Titus 1:1-2
God’s plan of salvation was prepared for us even before we were created. Before time began, the plan and the hope were set. The Father had created the plan. In John 4:34, Jesus said that His food was to do His Father’s will - “to finish His work”. And in Luke 22:42, when praying to the Father, Jesus said “not My will, but Yours, be done.”
God, the Father, had the plan. But there is more to the plan. He had created the great plan of salvation and someone had to carry it out. It was His Son, Jesus Christ, who would carry out the plan.
according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, Ephesians 3:11
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” John 19:28
The Father created the plan and the Son carried it out. Christ accomplished all that was needed that we might be saved. As Jesus hung on the cross, He knew that He had fulfilled all things - that He had accomplished all that He needed to do. He had carried out the plan fully.
There is still more to the plan, however. It was created, it was carried out, but it still needed to be revealed. We need to know of the plan and of how we can be suitable that we may be partakers of the goodness that God provides in this plan of salvation.
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11
The Holy Spirit has revealed the plan for us. And so we see that each of the Three Persons of God were involved in the plan of salvation. The Father created the plan; The Son carried out the plan; and the Holy Spirit revealed it.
